«Gloomy cliffs, a build up of black boulders, toxic air and gray dead lake recall a memory of what Dante once predicted a limbo would look like. The only missing thing is Kharon, the ferryman of the souls of the dead, who would carry us further to the unknown… «Beyond»… From the memoirs of tourists (1953).
To this day a visit to the Mutnovsky volcano crater evokes tremor and the feeling of unpredictability. And rightly so. For it is one of the most active and unsteady volcanos of Kamchatka. The ascention along the snowbound path amid the breathtaking landscapes, boiling mud pools, sulfur steam bursting from under earth. All of this reminds greatly of the sceneries of hell so many times described in dozens of books. The perception of reality leaves you and you start to doubt if you came of your own free will or you were led here as an atonement for your sins.
The ever-changing wind wafts the thick sulfur fog from one side to another and uncovers new secrets of the «fire Dragon». But take into account that the volcano keeps an eye on you as well. If you are respectful and trustworthy, you’ll have an opportunity to visit another spectacular place — «Active Crater».
